Senator Ned Munir Nwoko has resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing divisions and crises within the party.
Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the Senate, communicated his decision to disengage from the nation’s main opposition party in a letter addressed to the PDP Chairman for Ward 8 in Aniocha North Local Government Area.
“My decision to resign is, first and foremost, due to the deep divisions and fractionalization within the party,” he wrote. “This fragmentation has made it increasingly difficult to foster unity and advance the collective interests of our people.”
The lawmaker recalled a recent incident at the party’s Board of Trustees meeting at its national secretariat, where a dispute over the party’s national secretary position turned physical.
“Just this week, precisely on the 29th of January, top party functionaries descended to the lowest levels, physically fighting over the factions, which have now become irreconcilable,” Senator Nwoko added.
Emphasizing his commitment to his constituents, the lawmaker decried the weakened party structure in the state and said that stepping away from the PDP is necessary to fulfill his obligations.
Senator Nwoko, a founding member of the PDP since 1999, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, representing Aniocha/Oshimili. He was elected to the Senate in 2023.
