The House of Representatives has summoned 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) over an outstanding N2.6 trillion owed to the federation account.
The resolution followed a Public Accounts Committee hearing chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam, after reviewing the 2021 Auditor-General’s report.
Documents from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET) showed Abuja, Ibadan, Ikeja, and Kaduna Discos as the top debtors, each owing over N270 billion. The least indebted, Yola Disco, still owed more than N100 billion.
The report also flagged other lapses, including N30 billion uncollected debt from market operators, N100 billion paid for power not supplied to the grid, and N26 billion owed by foreign firms for electricity exports.
Lawmakers said all 11 Discos must appear before the committee to explain the debts and present repayment plans.
