The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, amidst a series of controversies and allegations. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was elected as the new Speaker. Hon. Fatai Mojeed, previously Deputy Chief Whip, has assumed the role of Deputy Speaker.

Reports indicate Obasa’s impeachment stems from fallout over remarks made during Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s budget presentation last November. The former Speaker had sparked criticism by suggesting he was both capable and experienced enough to contest for Lagos State governorship.

“I have made it a personal task to mobilize people on the platform of Mandate, which some political detractors have misconstrued as a selfish aspiration,” Obasa said. “Becoming governor is secondary, but that does not mean I lack experience or am too young to run. Those before me were not better off.”

Obasa dismissed rumours that he sought familial connections in Ojo to validate his candidacy ambitions.

Adding to his challenges, allegations emerged accusing Obasa of mismanaging N17 billion for a gate at the Assembly complex, as well as mishandling constituency funds and projects.

Efforts to contact Obasa’s representatives for a response were unsuccessful as of press time.
