Lagos Court Rules Obasa’s Removal as Speaker Was Unlawful

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the State House of Assembly unconstitutional and without legal basis.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, who delivered the ruling on Wednesday, held that the decision to remove Obasa on January 13, 2025, did not follow due process. She also nullified all legislative activities and resolutions that took place during the sitting when the removal occurred.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I and is serving his sixth term in the House, was removed over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Mojisola Meranda was named as his successor.

Despite being reinstated after 49 days following intense political developments within the House, Obasa continued with his legal challenge, questioning the legality of his removal.

The judgment now firmly reestablishes Obasa’s position and invalidates the earlier proceedings that led to his ouster.
