The Lagos State House of Assembly has defended its decision to impeach former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, asserting that the process followed constitutional guidelines.
Obasa was removed on January 13 by over two-thirds of the lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and abuse of office, including claims he spent ₦17 billion on a gate for the Assembly complex.
Addressing supporters at his Ikeja residence, Obasa maintained that his impeachment was invalid, saying, “I believe I am still the Speaker until due process is followed.”
In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode, the Assembly stated, “Over two-thirds of members stand united behind Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker. We stand by our decision and remain committed to good governance.”
The lawmakers urged Obasa to embrace peace, warning that any attempts to disrupt the Assembly’s work would be resisted.
Efforts to reach Obasa for further comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
