Experts have called for urgent measures to reduce the cost of cement and cut carbon emissions from its production by 40 percent.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, Lauret Grimmeissen urged Nigeria’s cement industry to adopt limestone calcined clay cement, saying it lowers emissions without affecting quality or price.

Chairman of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN), Mohammed Lawal, represented by Emmanuel Ilaboya, explained that clinker production — a major step in making cement — releases large amounts of carbon dioxide.

Prof. Kolawole Olonode of UNILAG added that lowering cement costs would make housing more affordable for Nigerians.
