Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Power, Works and Housing, has urged young Nigerians to resist the urge to leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad, despite ongoing economic challenges.
Speaking at the 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies of Elizade University in Ondo State, Fashola emphasized the importance of perseverance, recalling that many prominent figures, such as Folorunso Alakija and Chief Tunde Afolabi, faced similar hardships but chose to stay and contribute to the nation’s growth.
Fashola reflected on the struggles of earlier generations, citing musician Dr. Victor Olaiya’s song, which lamented the tough economic times in the 1960s. He challenged young people to push through difficulties and position themselves for leadership roles rather than seeking to flee.
Michael Ade-Ojo, founder of Elizade University, expressed fulfillment with the institution’s progress in producing graduates who are globally competitive. Despite limited financial gains from his investments in the university, Ade-Ojo takes pride in the impact the school has made.
“My goal has been to provide world-class education in Nigeria. It’s heartening to see our graduates thrive,” Ade-Ojo noted, urging the university to focus on research and entrepreneurship.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kayode Ijadunola assured that Elizade University is committed to shaping graduates who can tackle the country’s economic and technological challenges, highlighting the school’s ongoing efforts to enhance research and community engagement.
