President Donald Trump has approved a controversial policy allowing immigration authorities to conduct raids on schools, churches, and hospitals, reversing a decade-long restriction on such locations.

The directive, announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday, aims to eliminate “safe zones” for undocumented immigrants. Acting DHS Secretary Benjamin Huffman reinstated expedited removal procedures, enabling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport individuals who cannot prove continuous residence in the U.S. for over two years.

“Criminals will no longer hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,” the DHS stated, adding that law enforcement officers would exercise “common sense” during operations.

The move has drawn widespread criticism. Advocacy groups warn it could deter immigrant families from accessing essential services like healthcare and education, while religious leaders call for compassion and a focus on humanity in policymaking.

This directive forms part of a broader crackdown on immigration under the Trump administration, which includes new measures to suspend refugee programs and intensify ICE operations nationwide.
