The World Bank Group has reaffirmed its commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) worldwide, emphasizing that eliminating the menace will significantly enhance economic growth.

Pamela Chebiwott Tuiyott, the Regional Head and GBV Coordinator for Africa, stated this during an induction event for First Responders organized by the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP) in Abeokuta. She highlighted that GBV, deeply rooted in gender inequality and abuse of power, costs nations an estimated 2–4% of their GDP annually.

In Nigeria, 31% of women experience physical violence, with child marriage rates at 30.3%. The World Bank collaborates globally to close gender gaps, ensuring sustainable growth by empowering women and girls.

OGSTEP Coordinator, Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odusi, reiterated Ogun State’s dedication to addressing GBV by fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all residents.
