The Plateau state police command has confirmed the unfortunate death of a trader identified as Nasiru Abubakar, from a stray bullet fired by security personnel in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of the state. The deceased was reportedly killed on Monday when members of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board, (JMDB) taskforce arrived Concole market to enforce the law prohibiting roadside trading, a situation that led to disruption of peace in the area.
In a statement on Tuesday, confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Alfred Alabo, said the incident occurred when all efforts to disperse some criminal elements failed and one of the personnel fired a warning shot into the air in an attempt to scare them away, leading to the death of a trader.
The statement reads in part: “On 17/06/2024 at about 2pm, the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) Task Force, which is mandated to regulate buildings and vehicular traffic within the Greater Jos master plan, came to Bukuru on execution of the state government’s executive orders. While in the process, they were attacked by some armed hoodlums who began to destroy the properties of innocent citizens. About six cars were set ablaze while a yet to be estimated number of others were damaged.”
The police spokesman added the force has restored normalcy in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis after a violent attack on officials of the Jos metropolitan development board while warning all persons with criminal intention within the state to either desist from such activities or flee the state as the police command remained resolute in the fight against crime and criminally.
