Over 3.5m Displaced Nigerians Need Urgent Help — Stakeholders

Nigeria is currently hosting over 3.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 138,000 refugees, according to the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI).

This was disclosed during a stakeholders’ dialogue held in Ilorin to mark the 2025 World Refugee Day. Themed “Community as a Superpower,” the event brought together government officials, humanitarian workers, and traditional leaders.

Basheer Yusuf, North Central Coordinator of the NCFRMI, said the majority of IDPs are in the North East, North West, and North Central, while over 410,000 Nigerian refugees are in neighbouring countries. He called for stronger support systems to tackle the crisis.

Speakers at the event urged host communities to show empathy and called for more coordinated action to support affected families.
