Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, has hit back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo over recent remarks criticizing Tinubu’s administration.
Obasanjo, speaking at a forum held at Yale University in Connecticut, USA, accused the current government of poor governance, alleging widespread corruption, leadership failures, and moral shortcomings.
In a swift response via his X account, Dare labelled Obasanjo’s criticisms as baseless, arguing that Obasanjo himself oversaw “the most corrupt presidency on record.” He dismissed the former president’s claims, stating they lacked credibility.
Dare also accused Obasanjo of squandering $16 billion on failed power projects, resulting in what he described as “megawatts of darkness” across the country. He referenced the controversial third-term bid by Obasanjo and claimed that subsequent administrations have had to address the consequences of his flawed policies. Dare argued that Obasanjo should apologize to Nigerians for his role in the nation’s current challenges.
“Obasanjo needs to pause his habit of undermining leaders, especially his successors, and reflect on the extent of his own contribution to the difficult state of the Nigerian nation. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now making earnest efforts to restore the country’s development path,” Dare remarked.
Obasanjo, a former military head of state who later became a democratically elected president, is often seen as a respected elder statesman. He has a long history of openly critiquing government policies, both in public speeches and through private correspondences.
