The Kano State Film Censorship Board has taken decisive action against Kannywood singer Usman Sojaboy and actresses Shamsiyya Muhammad and Hasina Suzan, banning them from participating in any activities within the Hausa film industry.
This development, announced in a statement by the board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, follows the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing the artists involved in acts deemed inappropriate and contrary to Kano’s religious and cultural values.
“This decision was made after a viral video surfaced portraying immorality that contradicts Kano’s religion, culture, norms, and values,” the statement explained. The board also noted receiving numerous complaints from the public and religious scholars about the conduct of the individuals involved.
Usman Sojaboy, in particular, was flagged for repeatedly disregarding warnings about his use of vulgar and offensive content. The Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, instructed the preview unit to ensure the banned individuals do not feature in any Kannywood productions moving forward.
Theatres and entertainment centres across the state have also been mandated to enforce the ban as part of broader efforts to preserve Kano’s cultural integrity and moral framework.
