The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has refuted rumours circulating about his death, assuring the public that he is alive and well.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu dismissed the claims as false, noting that the story, which appeared on December 9, 2024, via some online platforms and social media, was entirely fabricated.
“Our attention has been drawn to a fake news narrative… Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale, and hearty. In fact, he has not travelled to London in the last two years,” the statement clarified.
The INEC Chairman underscored his active presence at key events, including an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on December 11 and a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on December 12. Both events were widely covered by national media.
Yakubu condemned the reappearance of such unfounded rumours, which he recalled had been spread similarly in 2021. He urged the public to disregard fake news and warned against its negative impact on individuals and society at large.
“The Commission remains committed to collaborating with responsible media professionals to combat the spread of fake news and its dangers to society,” the statement concluded.
