The Federal Government has issued a fresh flood warning to nine northern states, urging residents in high-risk areas to be on alert.
The warning was released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW Centre) of the Federal Ministry of Environment. According to a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, the affected states may experience heavy rainfall and flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.
States placed on red alert include Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara and Borno. Adamawa and Katsina have the highest number of towns listed, including Mubi, Shelleng, Abba-Kumbo, Katsina town, Kaita and Bindawa.
Other locations on the watchlist are Azare and Jama’are in Bauchi; Gwaram in Jigawa; Nafada in Gombe; Ngala in Borno; Sumaila in Kano; Anka in Zamfara; and Makira in Sokoto.
The FEW Centre called on state governments, emergency agencies, and community leaders to monitor the situation closely and provide feedback on any developments.
This latest alert comes barely a week after a similar warning was issued to several states following rising water levels along the River Niger, which could affect communities from Jebba to Lokoja.
