The Federal Government will launch a national policy on organ transplantation next month, according to Daju Kachollom, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, Kachollom, represented by Dr. Jimoh Salaudeen, highlighted efforts to regulate organ donation practices and prevent exploitation through newly drafted guidelines.

The policy, developed by the National Tertiary Health Institutions Standards Committee (NTHISC), covers ethical standards for kidney, liver, eye, and tissue transplants, as well as provisions for gamete and embryo donation. Approval processes are underway, with compliance monitoring to follow two months post-launch.

Prof. Philip Abiodun, NTHISC chairman, emphasized the policy’s focus on ethical procedures, while Prof. Jacob Awobusuyi noted ongoing measures to regulate private health facilities involved in organ transplants.
