Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has commended Media Trust Group for its investment in journalism, newsroom innovation and media diversification, declaring that the organisation has made the government proud through its contribution to the Nigerian economy.
Barau gave the commendation on Thursday in Abuja at the launch of the Media Trust’s Converged Digital Newsroom, where he praised the media organisation for embracing technology and adapting its operations to changing trends in the industry.
“We are proud of you. Really proud of you,” he said, noting that Media Trust had demonstrated the entrepreneurial qualities required to sustain and grow a business.
The Deputy Senate President described the organisation as a trailblazer, citing its transition from a weekly publication to a daily newspaper and its subsequent expansion into television, radio and digital platforms.
“Before I came in, I told the chairman that this outfit is a game changer. You have broken the jinx,” he said.
According to Barau, Media Trust’s willingness to take risks, innovate and diversify its operations offers valuable lessons for other media organisations and businesses seeking to remain competitive.
He said the launch of the digital newsroom demonstrated the organisation’s commitment to modernising its operations and keeping pace with technological developments, including artificial intelligence.
“Do not remain where you are. Try to move with the trend. Try to innovate. Try to be proactive. You don’t win, because if you remain where you are, the world will move and leave you behind,” he said.
Barau urged businesses to embrace innovation, describing it as essential to their survival and long-term success in a rapidly changing business environment.
He also highlighted Media Trust’s contribution to the economy through employment generation, increased business activity and tax payments.
According to him, the organisation’s expansion has increased its workforce and patronage, enabling it to contribute more to government revenue.
“You are not only helping your enterprise, you are helping the entire economy. Because you are growing. As you grow, you are contributing to the economy,” he said.
The Deputy Senate President added that the private sector remained the engine of economic growth and commended Media Trust for playing its part in strengthening the economy.
He said the organisation’s achievements showed that media businesses could combine professional journalism with sound entrepreneurship and effective management.
Barau also cited his own investment in technology education as an example of the importance of anticipating future trends.
He recalled sponsoring about 200 students to study artificial intelligence and robotics at universities abroad approximately two years ago, saying the students had completed their studies and were expected to return to Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that their expertise could contribute to the country’s technological development and potentially benefit organisations such as Media Trust.
Barau congratulated the management and staff of Media Trust on the launch, saying the Senate recognised and appreciated the organisation’s efforts to improve its operations and advance journalism in Nigeria.
“I congratulate you, and I commend you on behalf of the legislature,” he said.
