An officer attached to the Edo State Police Command has allegedly shot and killed 18-year-old Chinedu Abimbor for failing to stop at a checkpoint in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
Sources said the incident occurred on Wednesday when the victim, driving a Mercedes-Benz, refused to pull over when flagged down. In response, one of the officers reportedly opened fire, killing him on the spot. His brother, who was in the car, was arrested and taken into custody.
The killing sparked protests, with youths accusing the police of profiling and harassing young men in the area. They demanded justice and the immediate release of the victim’s brother but were met with tear gas.
Police spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu said Commissioner of Police Betty Otimenyin has ordered a full-scale investigation and withdrawn the officers involved. She assured the public that justice would be served.
