CAPPA Urges Stronger Tobacco Control Laws

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has urged the federal government to prioritize public health over tobacco industry profits, highlighting alleged “unholy alliances” between public agencies and tobacco firms.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, CAPPA criticized two bills proposing amendments to the National Tobacco Control Act (NTCA) 2015, citing procedural flaws and risks to public health. CAPPA also condemned industry tactics, including youth-targeted marketing and partnerships with public institutions, in violation of Section 18 of the NTCA.

The group called for stricter enforcement of regulations, such as a 100-meter school buffer zone, and urged amendments that align with global best practices to hold the tobacco industry accountable.
