A 16-year-old student, Praise Malachi, has died in a flood at Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, while hurrying home to check her Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results.
Her father, Emmanuel Malachi, said she slipped while trying to cross a flooded area after heavy rain on Tuesday evening. Praise’s body was later found in Hunkuyi, Kudan Local Government Area.
The deceased, a final-year student of Government Day Secondary School, Samaru, had reportedly excelled in her exams and had earlier secured a scholarship from the Centre for Girls’ Education, Zaria, because of her academic performance.
Neighbours said erosion in the community worsens flooding during rainfall and has claimed several lives.
The Centre for Girls’ Education described Praise as one of its brightest students and called on authorities to build a bridge and address the erosion problem to prevent further tragedies.
Zaria has faced repeated flooding in recent years, with hundreds of homes and public facilities destroyed in previous incidents.
