A 30-year-old woman, Mercy Michael, has been remanded by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, for allegedly killing her eight-month-old daughter using rat poison.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) charged Michael with culpable homicide, in violation of Section 189 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
Prosecutor Marcus Audu revealed that the incident was reported on December 11 by one Godfrey Sunday from Fadia Bakut, Zonkwa. Audu explained that Michael allegedly fed the infant rat poison on December 10 for yet-to-be-determined reasons.
The prosecutor further stated that the accused confessed to the act during interrogation.
The presiding magistrate adjourned the case to December 17 for further mention, and Michael was ordered to remain in a correctional facility pending the next hearing.
