WAEC Review: 63% Pass English, Maths After Error Correction

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says nearly 63% of candidates who took the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have now passed English Language and Mathematics after a review of the results.

Out of 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exam, 1,239,884 obtained at least five credits, including English and Maths. This is a sharp rise from the 38.32% earlier announced, representing an improvement of over 24%.

The upgrade followed the discovery of a printing error in the English Language objective paper, caused by a wrongly serialised code file provided by one of WAEC’s service providers. The council had earlier introduced a “serialisation” system in four subjects — English, Biology, Economics, and Mathematics — to curb exam malpractice by varying questions on candidates’ papers.

WAEC’s Head of National Office, Amos Dangut, told journalists that the initial poor performance sparked concerns from education stakeholders, prompting an internal review that uncovered the error.
