The White House has announced that President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday. The test came back on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre. Biden had been attending a series of campaign events in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a bid to shore up votes amongst black people and other working-class minorities.

“He is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms,” Jean-Pierre said.

“He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time. The White House will provide regular updates on the President’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation,” the statement added.

Biden, who is 81 years old was said to be experiencing mild symptoms and has received his first dose of the antiviral drug Paxlovid, according to his doctor.

He has also come under intense scrutiny since he had less than impressive debate outing against his rival, Republican Donald Trump. Biden has been facing calls from many senior members of his party to drop out of the race and pass the baton to his Vice President, Kamala Harris, with the latest call coming from House of Representatives member and candidate for senate from the state of California, Adam Schiff. There have also been reports former speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority leader, Chuck Schumer, have privately urged the president to drop out.
