Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war, warning of steep tariffs and sanctions if a deal is not reached soon.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump said, “If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.”

Trump, who has previously expressed admiration for Putin, claimed he was trying to help Russia. “I’ve always had a very good relationship with President Putin,” he said. “That being said, I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR. Settle now and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.”

Trump’s remarks come as the war in Ukraine grinds on, with rising international pressure for a resolution.
