U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on all foreign-made films entering the United States, saying the move is to protect the struggling American movie industry.
Trump claimed that other countries were luring filmmakers with incentives, calling it a threat to national security. “This is also about messaging and propaganda,” he said, directing the U.S. Department of Commerce and trade officials to begin implementing the tariff immediately.
“We want movies made in America again,” he added.
Despite recent challenges, the U.S. box office earned $8.7 billion last year, slightly down from $9 billion in 2023.
