Toddler Abuse Cases Surge Across Nigeria

A growing number of toddlers—some as young as six months—are falling victim to sexual abuse across Nigeria, with new data showing 25 reported cases in 13 states in 2024 alone.

Most of the victims were girls between two and three years old, often abused by people known to their families. Lagos recorded the highest number with nine cases, followed by Delta and other states including Bauchi, Adamawa, and Kogi.

Rights groups say the real number is likely much higher due to underreporting, stigma, and family pressure to settle quietly.

Experts and parents are calling for urgent action from government and communities to protect children and punish offenders. A health worker warned the physical and mental trauma from such abuse can affect victims for life.

Despite existing laws, few offenders are convicted. Advocates are urging stronger enforcement, public awareness, and support systems for survivors.
