The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House following the council meeting.
Minister Idris stated that the decision was taken to honour General Yakubu Gowon, a former Head of State who served Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. The renaming is seen as a recognition of his significant contributions to the nation.
He further noted that the name change would require legislative endorsement from the National Assembly, as mandated by law. The move, he explained, underscores the government’s commitment to celebrating the legacies of distinguished Nigerians.
The University of Abuja, often referred to as UniAbuja, is a federal institution located in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. Established in January 1988, it has played a pivotal role in advancing higher education in the country.
