President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rejected the N942 billion budget proposed by the National Population Commission (NPC) for the upcoming national census, emphasizing the need to reduce expenses.

During a recent meeting with NPC officials at the State House, Tinubu expressed concerns over the high cost and suggested deploying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to minimize personnel expenses. He also announced plans to set up a review committee to adjust the budget in line with Nigeria’s current financial situation.

A source quoted by The Punch said the president remains committed to conducting the census but insists on a more cost-effective approach. He also underscored the importance of an accurate population count for national planning, particularly in areas like employment, agriculture, and economic policies.

Nigeria’s last census was conducted in 2006, with multiple attempts at a new one stalled due to funding and logistical issues. The 2023 census, planned under former President Muhammadu Buhari, was postponed due to budget constraints and political transitions.
