Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has raised concerns over the proposed tax reform bills, warning they disproportionately benefit Lagos State while disadvantaging others, including the North. Speaking on Politics Today, he clarified that his criticism was not against President Tinubu but aimed at fostering fairness.

Zulum emphasized the need for stakeholder consultations, urging a pause to analyze the reforms. He noted that governors had advised the federal government at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting to delay implementation for further review.

Citing economic implications, Zulum said only Lagos stands to gain from the reforms while other regions, including the Southeast, South-South, and parts of the Southwest, risk adverse effects. “Why rush? Let’s analyze thoroughly,” he urged, calling for equitable policies.

Presidential aide Tope Ajayi dismissed Zulum’s claims as baseless, urging governors to avoid misinformation. He clarified that no part of the bills proposes the scrapping of agencies such as TETFund, NASENI, or NITDA.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also weighed in, advocating for a fiscal system rooted in justice and equity. He urged the National Assembly to make NEC’s resolutions public and ensure inclusive public hearings that engage stakeholders such as civil society, traditional leaders, and policy experts.
