Supreme Court Upholds Okpebholo’s Election as Edo Governor

The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed the election of Monday Okpebholo as governor of Edo State, dismissing the appeal filed by PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo.

In a unanimous judgment, the five-member panel held that Ighodalo failed to prove allegations of electoral malpractice and non-compliance with the Electoral Act during the September 2024 governorship election.

Justice Garba Lawal, who read the lead judgment, said the PDP did not provide sufficient evidence to support claims of irregularities in the 432 polling units they challenged out of over 4,500 in the state.

He also faulted the dumping of BVAS-related materials on the court without proper witnesses.

INEC had declared Okpebholo of the APC winner with 291,667 votes against Ighodalo’s 247,655.
