The Nigerian Senate, on Thursday, advanced four controversial tax reform bills submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, passing them for a second reading. This development came after Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) presented the bills for debate during plenary.

Just a day earlier, senior government officials under Tinubu’s administration had made detailed presentations to the Senate, defending the proposed reforms. However, the bills have sparked widespread opposition, with Northern governors, traditional rulers, and the Northern Elders Forum expressing strong disapproval, stating the reforms do not align with the nation’s best interests.

Further updates are expected.
