Eleven almajiri children died on Monday after a big pile of sand fell on them in Yardoka village, Kaduna State. The children, aged 10 to 15, were digging sand to help their Quranic teacher make mud blocks for building a house when the sand collapsed around 1:45 p.m.

Most of the children were from Yardoka and nearby villages. Seven others who were trapped were rescued with injuries and are now being treated at a local health centre. A village leader said many of the children were almajirai who had come to study with their teacher. He explained that digging sand for building is common in the village.

Kaduna police confirmed the accident and said officers quickly went to the scene. They have started an investigation to find out what exactly happened.
