The Rivers State government has denied receiving any formal impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, despite claims by the state House of Assembly.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule, leading the pro-Wike lawmakers, announced that the Assembly had sent a notice accusing Fubara of reckless spending, obstructing legislative duties, and making unauthorized appointments. The notice, dated March 14, was signed by 26 lawmakers, giving Fubara 14 days to respond.

However, Rivers Information Commissioner, Barr. Joseph Johnson, dismissed the move, stating that no official communication had been addressed to the governor. He accused the lawmakers of stalling governance and worsening hardships for civil servants due to the ongoing political crisis.

This marks the second impeachment attempt against Fubara, following the failed bid in October 2023, which led to violent clashes and the burning of the Assembly complex. Meanwhile, the Assembly has also petitioned the EFCC to investigate Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, over alleged financial mismanagement.

Senior lawyers warn that the impeachment process must follow constitutional procedures, urging caution to prevent further political instability in the state.
