The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated emergency response centres in Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto following a deadly meningitis outbreak.
As of March 23, 2025, the outbreak has claimed 151 lives, with 1,826 suspected cases reported across 23 states, according to NCDC’s latest report.
Most of the cases—94%—were recorded in 10 states, including Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, and Bauchi. Seventeen LGAs in nine states have also reported more than 10 suspected cases.
The agency noted a 65% drop in new infections during the week under review, but stressed that surveillance and response efforts are still ongoing nationwide.
