Labour unions in Rivers State have warned of mass action if President Bola Tinubu does not reverse the emergency rule imposed on the state.
In a joint statement, NLC and TUC leaders condemned the move, saying it has worsened economic hardship for workers, many of whom remain unpaid. They accused the federal government of prioritising politics over citizens’ welfare and warned of nationwide disruptions if their concerns are ignored.
Meanwhile, NLC and TUC national leaders have also criticised the emergency rule, calling it unconstitutional and a threat to democracy. The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) echoed these concerns, warning of economic consequences.
In a legal challenge, lawyer Johnmary Jideobi has asked a Federal High Court to remove Rivers’ sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.), arguing that his appointment is illegal. Despite the controversy, Ibas has appointed Prof. Ibibia Worika as Secretary to the State Government.
