The Rivers State government has included menstrual health education in the curriculum of all secondary schools across the state.
The Director of Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Education, Dr. Chinedu Nwaodu, announced this in Port Harcourt during the launch of a book titled “Periods, Pads and Proud.”
She explained that the new curriculum will help teachers, parents, and students better understand menstrual health and hygiene. According to her, schools have been provided with the necessary materials, and principals are expected to ensure teachers deliver the lessons effectively.
Dr. Nwaodu added that efforts are underway to extend the programme to private schools.
Also speaking at the event, Elizabeth Aderonke Odukoya, a youth advocate and founder of the EmpowerHer Project, urged governments at all levels to adopt similar measures nationwide. She noted that her group, supported by volunteers from the medical field and student networks, has been campaigning for greater awareness of menstrual health.
