The House of Representatives is pushing for a central emergency call centre and a single short code for distress calls across Nigeria.
The proposal, sponsored by Hon. Emeka Martins Chinedu (Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte), seeks to unify all emergency numbers under one system, similar to 911 in the US.
He said the current setup is fragmented and confusing for citizens, stressing the need for a simple, nationwide code to access police, fire, medical, and disaster services.
The bill has passed first reading in the House.
