Reps Demand 5% Fuel Charge for Road Repairs

The House of Representatives has asked the federal government to start collecting a 5% charge on petrol and diesel prices to fix Nigerian roads.

This charge is part of the FERMA law but hasn’t been enforced yet. Lawmakers say the money will help maintain roads across the country.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority said they haven’t started collecting the charge because there’s no clear process yet, but they’re ready once systems are in place.

FERMA’s boss, Dr. Emeka Agbasi, said the agency is underfunded and the charge is needed to improve road maintenance. He also called for a special account to manage the money properly.
