The House of Representatives has given its approval to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu imposed emergency rule in the state, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. He also appointed a sole administrator to oversee the state during this period.

As required by the Constitution, a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly must approve the decision for it to take effect. During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen put the motion to a voice vote, and the majority supported it.

Earlier, Rep. Ali Isa JC moved a motion to amend the duration of the emergency rule and reduce it from six months. The motion was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuoha.

Speaker Abbas later confirmed that 243 lawmakers were present for the session.
