Rep Who Assaulted Bolt Driver Seeks Counseling, Apologizes for Unacceptable Behaviour

In response to a viral video capturing him assaulting a Bolt driver, House of Representatives member, Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, has publicly expressed deep regret for his actions.

The lawmaker’s apology follows widespread criticism from Nigerians and rights activists, who condemned his behaviour in the video. The footage, which surfaced Monday, shows Ikwechegh angrily confronting the driver, accusing him of disrespect for asking the lawmaker to step outside to collect a parcel. The situation escalated as Ikwechegh was filmed repeatedly striking the driver and allegedly threatening to “make him disappear” without facing any consequences.

The video has triggered a wave of outrage on social media, with many accusing Ikwechegh of abusing his position of power and demanding accountability.

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed it is investigating the incident, while the House of Representatives, in a statement released by its Spokesman Akin Rotimi, also condemned the lawmaker’s conduct. The House assured the public that they are closely monitoring the police investigation.

In a personal statement, Ikwechegh expressed remorse, acknowledging his behaviour was inappropriate for someone in his position:

“I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, deeply regret the disturbing incident that occurred at my residence. The video showing my unacceptable behaviour towards a Bolt driver delivering a waybill for me has caused harm, and I sincerely apologize.”

He further expressed his commitment to cooperate fully with the police investigation and emphasized his support for ensuring justice is served.

The lawmaker stated he is taking steps to address the root causes of his actions: “I am seeking professional counselling to ensure such behaviour never happens again. I will also participate in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect and empathy.”

Ikwechegh concluded his statement by calling on Nigerians to work together to foster a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, expressing hope for healing and personal growth.
