A heavy rainstorm has wreaked havoc in Iyara community, of Ijumu local government area of Kogi state, destroying hundreds of houses, and rendering more than one thousand people homeless.
Initial reports out of the area said an early morning rain on Monday, April 8th, 2024, was accompanied by heavy storm which led to the destruction of several properties in the town.
Some of the affected families are currently taking shelter in houses of neighbours, relatives or friends, pending the time they can fix their destroyed houses.
The paramount ruler of the community, Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, Oba Jacob Meduteni, described the disaster as unfortunate incident, stressing the destruction the community experienced. The traditional ruler said many have been rendered homeless as a result of the violent rainstorm.
He therefore called public spirited individuals and corporate bodies to assist the victims.
The national president of Iyara development association (IDA), Aliyu Badaki said over 1,000 persons, mostly women and children were affected by the disaster, noting it would take months, and in some cases, years, to fully recover from such a catastrophe.
