Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Easter Monday.

He passed away peacefully at 7:35 a.m. in his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, he made history as the first Jesuit, first South American, and first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. He was elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Known for his humility and deep concern for the poor, Francis remained active despite recent health struggles. His death comes just a day after giving his final Easter blessing.

The Vatican says funeral arrangements and the process to elect a new pope will be announced soon.
