Police Officer Arrested for Allegedly Killing Musician in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended and detained one of its officers for allegedly shooting and killing a popular traditional musician on Friday night.

In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the tragic incident took place at approximately 8:10 p.m. at the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.

Ndukwe explained, “A male police inspector attached to the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Enugu State Police Command has been arrested and detained over the alleged murder of a traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, also known by his stage name, Igbo-Jah.”

According to the statement, the musician had just finished a casual visit to the squad’s headquarters when, under unclear circumstances, the police officer discharged his rifle, hitting the victim. The musician was immediately rushed to the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead. His body has since been taken to the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure the erring officer faces appropriate disciplinary measures.

Condemning the incident as unacceptable, Uzuegbu extended his sympathies to the family, friends, and associates of the late musician. He also vowed that those responsible for the tragic event would be held accountable in accordance with the law, serving as a deterrent to others.

He urged the deceased’s family and supporters to remain calm and cooperate with the police as they work towards ensuring justice is served.
