Peter Obi Explains Why He Rejected ₦120m House Gift

Labour Party’s Peter Obi says he once turned down a ₦120 million house gift while serving as Anambra governor, asking that the money be used to build classrooms instead.

In a statement marking his 64th birthday, Obi recalled how he asked donors to redirect funds meant for personal gifts or celebrations toward public projects.

“Rather than a house, we built classrooms in Agulu, Ekwulobia, and Abatete,” he said. “Another group planned a ₦20 million party. I asked them to buy computers for schools instead. They donated 200 desktops.”

Obi said similar redirections led to bus donations for institutions, including one for the Old Rangers Association.

He prayed for a Nigeria where leaders use public funds for public good and urged Nigerians to keep working toward a more just and compassionate society.
