Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated N1 billion to the National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination to support the fight against the disease.
The donation, made through her Renewed Hope Initiative, was announced during a meeting with the taskforce in Abuja.
She urged women to seek early medical help, stressing that cervical cancer is treatable if detected in time.
Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, said the First Lady’s support helped drive the rollout of the HPV vaccine, with 12 million girls already vaccinated and six million more targeted this year.
Taskforce Chair, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said Nigeria records over 12,000 cervical cancer cases and nearly 8,000 deaths annually. The disease, he said, remains a major public health threat despite being preventable.
NICRAT Director-General also called for more awareness, screening, and access to treatment to save lives.
