At least 50 suspected Boko Haram insurgents were killed by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) following a fierce gun battle in Farin-Kasa, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, in a statement on Tuesday, disclosed that the insurgents ambushed a monitoring convoy assigned to protect the Shiroro national grid installation in Niger State. The convoy, comprising nine officers and 71 other ranks from various commands, was attacked on Monday, November 18, as it passed through Farin-Kasa.
“The Boko Haram elements, numbering over 200 and heavily armed, had positioned themselves on a hilltop, lying in wait for the convoy. Upon sighting the team, they launched an attack using sophisticated weapons,” Afolabi said.
The NSCDC operatives engaged the insurgents in a heated exchange, successfully repelling the ambush and neutralizing more than 50 of the attackers. However, seven NSCDC personnel remain missing after the encounter, and efforts are ongoing to locate them in the surrounding area. Several operatives who sustained injuries are receiving medical treatment at a nearby facility.
The NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, condemned the assault, describing it as “a brutal and senseless attack on security operatives dedicated to protecting national assets.” He also assured the public of continued efforts to secure the region.
The incident underscores the escalating threat posed by insurgent groups in northern Nigeria, highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of security agencies tasked with maintaining order.
