Bakers in North-East Nigeria say over 40% of bakeries have closed due to rising costs of flour, sugar, and other essentials.

Alhaji Mohammad Gidado Sani, chairman of the regional bakers’ association, said many bakers can no longer afford production costs, leading to mass job losses.

He blamed middlemen for hoarding flour and inflating prices, making it difficult to keep bread affordable.

Sani urged the government to intervene, warning that if the crisis persists, more bakeries will shut down, worsening unemployment and food insecurity.
