NLC Says Nigeria Becoming Less Free

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says Nigeria is veering toward authoritarian rule, with democratic freedoms and workers’ rights under threat.

Speaking at the NLC Rain School in Uyo, NLC President Joe Ajaero accused government at all levels of stifling dissent and union activity. He warned of a shrinking civic space and increasing hardship ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Nigeria is now among the 10 worst countries for workers’ rights,” Ajaero said, accusing some leaders of undermining democracy for political gains.

He also criticised the federal government over an alleged attempt to seize the NLC headquarters and condemned the Edo State governor for interfering in labour matters.

Ajaero called on workers to remain politically aware and resist growing repression.
