The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated its call for the Federal Government to withdraw the contentious tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, emphasized this stance in his New Year message to Nigerian workers, titled “In 2025, Hope Is in Our Collective Resolve.” He highlighted the need for inclusive dialogue among all key stakeholders to co-create a tax framework that enjoys broad acceptance and effectively drives national development.
Ajaero revealed that the issue would be a major focus of the NLC’s upcoming national dialogue in Ibadan, Oyo State, later this month. “This platform aims to promote partnerships in developing a national tax system that aligns with the aspirations of Nigerians and propels our nation toward sustainable development,” he stated.
In his message, the NLC president stressed the union’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ welfare, particularly amid economic challenges stemming from recent government policies. He reiterated the need for a wage review to reflect current realities and ensure industrial harmony.
“The increasing use of violence in engagements with workers and unions must cease. It is a recipe for industrial disharmony,” Ajaero warned. “Trade unions remain committed partners in progress, striving for national development while protecting the rights of workers and citizens.”
He called on the Federal Government to prioritize industrial peace by respecting agreements with trade unions and engaging in meaningful social dialogue.
Ajaero also insisted on full compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act from the start of the year, emphasizing that the NLC would hold the government accountable to its responsibilities.
The NLC president urged Nigerians to unite and collectively work toward overcoming the challenges that have hindered the nation’s progress.
“The challenges of survival we have faced as a people must not hold us down,” he said. “Instead, let us find inner strength to build a collective resolve to drive Nigeria out of the morass of underdevelopment that has held it captive for far too long. No external power will deliver us from the scourge of economic hardship and stagnation. It is only through our collective effort and determination that we can propel our nation forward.”
He also reminded the government that the welfare of citizens remains the primary justification for its existence.
“Access to food, better healthcare, quality housing, education, transportation, and greater security are key expectations of the people. Governance must translate into real benefits for citizens,” he stated.
Ajaero emphasized the need for government policies to reflect transparency, honesty, and inclusivity. “Policies must be devoid of chicanery, nepotism, and strong-arm tactics,” he said, stressing that inclusive governance and social dialogue are vital for building a stable and thriving democracy.
He concluded by urging the government at all levels to embrace these principles and foster greater ownership of policies by involving critical stakeholders in the decision-making process. “Such inclusiveness will ensure stability and sustainability in nation-building,” Ajaero affirmed.
