Members of the Nigeria labour congress (NLC) on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, stormed the national secretariat of the labour party in Abuja to protest against the party’s national convention scheduled to hold at the end of the month.
The congress also demanded the sacking of the national chairman of the party, Mr. Julius Abure, the NLC leadership accused Abure of planning to hold a “secret” convention without the inputs of major stakeholders.
The planned convention has pitched Abure against the NLC and the party’s house of representatives’ caucus, with the workers accusing Abure of planning to destroy the party. They accuse the Abure led team of planning a convention aimed at re-electing Abure as the sole administrator of the party, with much of the planning, they allege, shrouded in secrecy.
It took the intervention of men of the Nigerian Police force, who refused the protesting workers from gaining entry into the party secretariat, but the protesting union workers threatened to go on with their protests with similar outings planned across the country.
